June 4, 2010, Newsletter Issue #74: Flowers - friend or foe?

Tip of the Week

In western society, it is customary to bring flowers and plants to the sick. If you´re tempted to do the same with a cancer patient, ask first. Some patients have so low of a white blood count that any bacteria, pollen, or spores on those beautiful tulips, roses, or orchids may send them right back into the hospital. Your kind gesture would be appreciated, but not the aftermath that may follow it. So hold off on the surprise gift from the florists until you´re sure that the patient can enjoy them without any harm befalling them.
