Cancer Treatments and Side Effects

There are a variety of cancer treatments available. The best types of cancer treatments for an individual patient will vary based on the type of cancer, stage of cancer and if it has metastasized. If it has metastasized, treatment of the initial and subsequent cancer may require different treatment than if it had not. Examples of cancer treatments include chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and medication. A variety of cancer treatments may be used either in conjunction with one another or separately.

Cancer treatment side effects can include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, hair loss and weakness. There are cancer treatment side effects that impact a patient mentally. These cancer treatment side effects can include depression, a feeling of isolation and/or withdrawal. Both the mental and physical cancer treatment side effects must be treated. Often cancer treatment side effects can be lessened by taking other prescription medication that is prescribed by a physician. Cancer treatments are performed by a physician but there is typically a support team that can include a social worker, therapist, nutritionist and pharmacist.
